The Energy Bottleneck and the Renewable Solution

Abstract.

More than two centuries of extensive use of fossil fuels and half a century of oil abundance have had two main effects: the material one of making the humankind’s socio- economic metabolism fossil fuels dependent, and a psychological one: generating the delusion that a never ending flux of cheap energy from nature to economy is possible. Both effects are dangerous and need to be faced quickly and efficiently.

In order to make the better choices industry, citizens and states should adopt a scientific criterion.

It is generally believed that the economic factors affecting the price of the energy for the consumers (companies, families and states) are the most important factors determining the choice of the energy sources. In fact these are the only factors considered in the choices of energy policy. In this talk we will try to propose a different point of view focusing on the physical factors that can be used to rank the energy sources.

These are: the Energy Return on Energy Investment (ERoEI), the volumetric and mass density and the surface density of the energy sources. On the basis of these factors a different energy landscape can be depicted in which the different renewable and non- renewable sources can be easily compared.

A comparison among energy sources will be made on the basis of the better technologies available. The will finally focus on the different renewable option available, assuming that in a short time from now it will be mandatory to free the socio-economic metabolism from fossil fuels and possibly from nuclear power as well.

The use of the surface of the planet to collect solar energy by means of the different technologies will be discussed in a general framework.

Particular attention will be given to the comparison between photovoltaic, thermal, conventional and tropospheric eolian technologies, and biomass.

Surse de energie regenerabilă

WIRA GRUP, în colaborare cu Facultatea de fizică a Universităţii Bucureşti, organizează, în data de 15 noiembrie 2008, un workshop cu tema „Surse de energie regenerabilă”.

WIRA GRUP, în colaborare cu Facultatea de fizică a Universităţii Bucureşti, organizează workshopul cu tema „Surse de energie regenerabilă”.

Evenimentul va avea loc în data de 15 noiembrie 2008, ora 10.00, la Facultatea de fizică a Universităţii Bucureşti, Amfiteatrul 1 „Acad. Eugen Bădărău”.

Workshopul are drept scop prezentarea tendinţelor mondiale referitoare la utilizarea resurselor energetice, tematica vizând cele mai „fierbinţi” aspecte ale domeniului: resurse de biomasă, tehnologii de conversie a biomasei în energie, sisteme de conversie a energiei solare, impactul de mediu, legislaţie europeană şi standardizare în domeniul energiei regenerabile.

Lucrările prezentate vor fi publicate, în format electronic, ca supliment al revistei „Calitatea-acces la succes”, partener media al evenimentului, editată de Societatea Română pentru Asigurarea Calităţii, publicaţie ştiinţifică recunoscută de CNCSIS, categoria B+ şi inclusă în bazele de date EBSCO Publishing.

Transportul Bucureşti-Măgurele şi retur se va face cu autocarul şi va fi asigurat de WIRA GRUP.
